 1) Cọkwe [tʃ-], Tschọkwe, Batshiọk [-tʃ-], Bantuvolk mit vielen Untergruppen beiderseits der Grenze Demokratische Republik Kongo/Angola und Demokratische Republik Kongo/Sambia, etwa 650 000 Menschen; leben von Feldbau und Jagd, auch Viehhaltung. Geheimbund- und Maskenwesen sind stark ausgeprägt. Die Chokwe stellen u. a. fein geschnitzte Masken und Holzfiguren mit massig-schwerem Charakter her. - Die Chokwe waren seit dem 17. Jahrhundert Untertanen des Reiches der Lunda, das sie um 1885 für kurze Zeit beherrschten.

 2) Bantusprache, die im Nordosten Angolas sowie - in geringerem Maß - auch im Süden der Demokratischen Republik Kongo und Westen Sambias von etwa 1 Mio. Menschen gesprochen wird.
